The African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights

The African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, also known as the Banjul Charter, is a regional human rights instrument designed to reflect the history, values, traditions, and development of Africa. The Charter entered into force on 21 October 1986.

The Charter recognizes individual and collective peoples' rights as well as duties. Article 18 declares that States shall eliminate discrimination against women and protect the rights of women and the children enshrined in international declarations and conventions.
