Amnesty International - Out of reach: The cost of maternal health in Sierra Leone (2009)

This Amnesty International report 'Out of reach: The cost of maternal health in Sierra Leone' addresses the various factors including harmful traditional practices like FGM and their impact on the health of pregnant women and mothers in Sierra Leone.

Approximately 94 per cent of Sierra Leone’s female population have been subjected to female genital mutilation, which according to the World Health Organization greatly increases the risks for women during childbirth. Although there have been some efforts among civil society to campaign for its abolition, the government has done little to prevent FGM.
