End FGM EU joins coalition urging action against discriminatory rhetoric in the European Parliament
Together with ILGA-Europe and more than 60 civil society organisations, End FGM European Network has signed a joint letter urging European Parliament President Roberta Metsola to take action against the rise of discriminatory rhetoric within the Parliament.
The coalition calls for EU institutions to safeguard respectful democratic debate and uphold the fundamental values of human dignity, equality and non-discrimination.
The letter was written following the events on 17 June at the European Parliament's plenary session, when several Members of the European Parliament chanted "send them back" following the vote on the proposed Return Regulation. The signatories stress that such incidents should not become normalised within the EU's democratic institutions.
The coalition calls on President Metsola to publicly reaffirm the Parliament's commitment to dignity, respect and to ensure that discriminatory behaviour is addressed consistently during parliamentary proceedings.
At End FGM European Network, we believe that democratic institutions must foster debate that respects the rights and dignity of all people. Challenging hate and discrimination in all their forms is essential to protecting fundamental rights and ensuring that Europe's values are reflected both in its policies and in its political discourse.
