Gambian Anti-FGM advocate Musu Bakoto Sawo awarded British human rights award

In the Gambia, it is estimated that over 75% of women and girls have undergone Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), As reported by the British Prime Minister’s Office. Musu Bakoto Sawo underwent mutilation as a young child. At the age of 14, she was married.

In 2015, Sawo began volunteering for the Girl Generation – an organization formulated to end FGM. As the Programme Manager, Sawo used her first-hand experiences to give human rights support and advocacy to the 700 activists and 1.5 million devotees of Girl Generation.
