Was ist weibliche Genitalverstümmelung?

Weltweit sind 150 Millionen Mädchen und Frauen von weiblicher Genitalverstümmelung (engl.: Female Genital Mutilation, kurz FGM) betroffen. Alle elf Sekunden werden einem weiteren Mädchen meist ohne Narkose und unter unhygienischen Bedingungen Teile der äußeren Genitalien entfernt. Neben der Amputation der Klitoris (Klitoridektomie) werden häufig die inneren Schamlippen ganz oder teilweise abgetrennt (Exzision).

Was sind die Folgen für die Betroffenen?

Genitalverstümmelung verursacht oft lebenslange körperliche, seelische und sexuelle Beschwerden. Unmittelbare Folgen der Genitalverstümmelung sind meist starke Schmerzen und lebensbedrohlicher Blutverlust. Werden mehrere Mädchen mit demselben Werkzeug verstümmelt, können zusätzlich Krankheiten und Infektionen wie HIV oder Hepatitis übertragen werden. Häufig sind chronische Schmerzen und Infekte sowie Inkontinenz und sexuelle Störungen dauerhafte Folgen dieser schweren Menschenrechtsverletzung. Das Zunähen (Infibulation) kann zudem zu Beschwerden beim Wasserlassen, bei der Menstruation und beim Sexualverkehr führen und stellt bei Geburten ein erheb liches Risiko für Mutter und Kind dar.
