EIGE - Female genital mutilation in the European Union and Croatia: Report (2013)

The European Institute for Gender equality (EIGE), an EU agency, produced this report on Female genital mutilation in the European Union and Croatia in 2013.

The study provides an overview of the extent of practice of FGM, existing protection measures (legal and otherwise), actors involved, existing policy measures and recommendations to address this “transnational nature” of FGM and protect affected women and girls living in the EU.

The EIGE report recommends the creation of a common methodological framework to address the lack of data and implementation of legal frameworks; development of protocols and guidelines for support services to be prepared to deal with FGM-related complications and involvement of key actors to lead to behavior change. In the area of EU’s role in coordination and intersectorial cooperation, EIGE’s key recommendation is the implementation of comprehensive and multiagency action plans on FGM addressing prevention, protection and prosecution.
