Maputo Protocol

The Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Women in Africa, better known as the Maputo Protocol, was adopted by the African Union as an additional protocol to the African Charter on Human and People's Rights in 2003.

53 African Countries have signed the Convention and 28 have ratified it.

FGM is listed as a harmful practice in Article 5 of the Protocol. This article calls for the provision of targeted support services and creation of awareness campaigns informing the public on the dangers of FGM and other harmful practices.
