Report: Gender Transformative Approaches to Ending Female Genital Mutilation

On 2 December 2021, AIDOS, GAMS and End FGM EU launched the report “Gender Transformative Approaches to Ending Female Genital Mutilation”, the result of this year’s International Stakeholders Dialogue (ISD).

The report and its main findings were presented during a Webinar, moderated by Dominique Uwase Alonga, which saw the participation of more than 80 stakeholders.

The report compiles the results of the International Stakeholder Dialogue which was held between October and November, coordinated by AIDOS, GAMS Belgique and the Network in a set of three online meetings within two working groups, an English-speaking and a French-speaking one. These meetings introduced the topic and gathered definitions of GTAs from the participants, who shared experiences from the field, identified the main challenges to implementing gender transformative strategies in tackling FGM and finally come together to propose possible solutions for these challenges.

International Stakeholder Dialogue

Between October and November, with our Members AIDOS and GAMS Belgique, the End FGM EU Secretariat supported the coordination of the International Stakeholder Dialogue which this year focused on Gender Transformative Approaches (GTAs) to ending Female Genital Mutilation.

The dialogue was supported by the UNFPA-UNICEF Joint Programme on the Elimination of Female Genital Mutilation and Spotlight Initiative to eliminate violence against women and girls funded – project “Building bridges between Africa and Europe to tackle FGM”. The Dialogue consisted of a series of three online meetings held in two working groups, an English-speaking and a French-speaking one.

In the meetings the conversation progressed from introducing the topic and defining GTAs, to sharing experiences from the field identifying the main challenges to implementing gender transformative strategies in tackling FGM and finally to find possible solutions for these challenges. The findings and recommendations of the ISD were included in a report whose main aim was to feed in key recommendations in the discussion of donors and key actors in the field of FGM prevention and care, through the Donor Working group on FGM (DWG). The report was launched during a webinar on 2 December 2021, which gathered more than 80 participants from Europe, Africa and North America.
