Community of Practice on Female Genital Mutilation

Our Member GAMS Belgium has launched a new Community of Practice (CoP) on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). Experts of different profiles are invited to join the Platform (scholars, health professionals, technical experts, social society) to discuss the problem of FGM in African countries and in Europe. The idea behind the CoP FGM is to offer policy makers and professionals, including those of the health care system, context-specific responses.

The project places particular focus on the psycho-sexual approaches to care for women affected by FGM and it pursues to contribute to the abandonment of FGM as well as to the improvement of the well-being of women and girls affected by the practice.

The Global Objective of the CoP FGM is to raise awareness among stakeholders and decision makers at all levels of power, enabling them to get involved and take action to help improve the quality and support services for women and girls that have undergone FGM in Europe and Africa.

The CoP Mission:

  • Promote the exchange of knowledge and experiences among actors working on FGM in Europe and Africa in a horizontal and intersectoral perspective, on both a local and an international level.
  • Make techniques, tools and information accessible.
  • Identify Good practices in order to improve Prevention and Care of FGM.
  • Bring field work experiences to political stakeholders (national and international).

This CoP is part of a global project, “Building bridges to tackle FGM/C”, financed by the UNICEF-UNFPA Joint programme on FGM/C.
