African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child

The African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child builds on the same basic principles as the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, highlighting issues of special importance in the African context.

Article 21 is of particular relevance to FGM as it declares an obligation for States to eliminate harmful social and cultural practices affecting children, and especially those practices that discriminate the child on the grounds of gender.
