Genital mutilation victim on Nauru for five years wins bid to have abortion in Australia

A pregnant Somali victim of female genital mutilation who has been languishing on Nauru will be brought to Australia to have an abortion after winning a legal bid against being shipped to Asia for the operation.

Lawyers from the National Justice Project fought an Australian government proposal to have the 30-year-old woman sent to Taiwan, where a Federal Court judge found there were no suitable medical facilities for the complex procedure.

The woman, whose identity has been suppressed by the court, has been on Nauru for almost five years despite being accepted as a refugee by Australia in November 2014.
