  • ENDING FGM: A Strategy for the European Union Institutions

February 2010

END FGM European Campaign has developed a strategy that identifies how the European Union can end female genital mutilation and protect the rights of women and girls subjected to, or under threat of, FGM. The strategy looks at five key dimensions in which the EU can make real progress in the fight against this practice. The recommendations made to the European Institutions and Member States are practical, based on human rights principles and informed by real women's and girls' experiences.

Main strategy is available in ENGLISH and FRENCH

Executive Summary is available in ENGLISH, FRENCH, PORTUGUESE and GERMAN

22 October 2009

Amnesty International has compiled declarations made by various organisations of health professionals. In particular, this document contains resolutions and guidelines for health professionals on dealing with female genital mutilation.

22 September 2009

Approximately 94 per cent of Sierra Leone’s female population have been subjected to female genital mutilation, which according to the World Health Organization greatly increases the risks for women during childbirth. Although there have been some efforts among civil society to campaign for its abolition, the government has done little to prevent FGM.

This Amnesty International report addresses the various factors including harmful traditional practices like FGM and their impact on the health of pregnant women and mothers in Sierra Leone.

July 2009

Amnesty International’s response to the communication of the European Commission on the future Stockholm Programme describes how the EU could effectively deal with female genital mutilation in the EU through this 5 year programme.

April 2009

Among the range of human rights concerns addressed in this Amnesty International (AI) document, female genital mutilation is raised as a human rights violation. AI calls upon the EU to protect the rights of young girls and women by adopting a framework to deal with FGM in the EU and in third countries.
