The END FGM campaign is a three-year Europe-wide campaign led by Amnesty International Ireland. It is running in partnership with non-governmental organisations that work directly with national governments in EU member states.
The campaign is committed to ensuring that the European Union adopts a definitive strategy to end female genital mutilation and provide protection to women and girls who flee their countries for fear of being mutilated.
Furthermore, it also works with other European institutions such as the Council of Europe.
In order to support the work of EU institutions on the issue of FGM and follow on the resolutions of the European Parliament on FGM, the END FGM campaign has developed a strategy with a number of tangible recommendations to end FGM and protect women and girls arriving in Europe to flee from the threat of mutilation. This strategy document highlights five key areas where the EU institutions and EU Member States can act to protect and promote the rights of girls at risk of being subjected to FGM and provide services for girl and women who have undergone FGM.
This strategy has been prepared in collaboration with organisations working with affected communities throughout Europe as well as experts in the field of law, human rights and development.
This strategy document is the foundation of the END FGM campaign's advocacy initiatives.
The document is available in English and French. The summary of the strategy is available additionally in German, Greek and Portuguese.
In its work with the European Union, the campaign started with an initiative in the summer of 2009 to garner support from Members of European Parliament (MEP) and the candidates for the 2009 European Elections.
Candidates and MEPs were asked to sign a Declaration of Intent to declare their support for 5 specific measures required to end female genital mutilation.
Organisations were also urged to sign a Declaration of Support to show their support for the initiative.
