IFRAH
Ifrah is a 22 year old girl. At the age of eight, she was forced to go through the most harmful form of female genital mutilation – infibulation. Infibulation involves cutting and sewing the genitals so that only a small hole is left through which urine can pass. Since then, she has suffered several health complications. When she came to Ireland, Ifrah was afraid to explain her condition, especially since the doctors did not have background knowledge of FGM.
As a result, a visit to the doctor for Ifrah is embarrassing and painful as she has to explain her particular condition each time.
Doctors have expressed frustration over the lack of knowledge and guidelines to help them deal with such cases of FGM. Sometimes, they have to search for expert advice at the last moment, for instance, when an infibulated woman arrives to give birth.
WHAT CAN THE EUROPEAN UNION DO?
The EU Member States can develop the necessary protocols, guidelines and provide training to medical professionals to ensure that women and girls living with FGM can, without shame, discuss their condition. This will help medical professionals who are often confronted with FGM and are uninformed of the proper guidelines.
